There will be a bass tournament in memory of Nick Bergman, who attended Phoenix schools and enjoyed playing football and basketball, but his real passion was fishing.
Bergman died of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma at 15. His family decided a bass tournament would be a good way to honor his memory and help others.
It started as just a small local tournament on Point Peninsula and has grown each year.
After moving the tournament to Hooper’s Harbor and Marina, with the help of family and friends, the Bergmans have donated over $25,000 dollars to the Nick Bergman Fund for Pediatric Cancer Research. This money is given to the Upstate Medical University Foundation at Golisano Children’s Hospital in Syracuse.
The Nick Bergman Memorial Bass Tournament will be held Saturday, July 9 at Hooper’s Harbor and Marina on Route 12E in Three Mile Bay. There will be a barbeque, door prizes and raffles.
The tournament consists of two divisions-largemouth and small-mouth. The top three heaviest fish in each division will be awarded money prizes of $250, $150 and $100. Only one prize per person in each division will be awarded.
There will also be a free perch contest for children 12 and under determined by length. Weigh in will be no later than 5 p.m.
Tickets are $10 for each division and are available at Bombadil’s, Larkin’s Restaurant, Monirae’s Restaurant and RFH’s Hideaway Restaurant.
Any questions concerning the tournament can be directed to Tiffany Bergman at 857-4782.
