The title “Battle of the Books” became a contest of epic proportions as five teams of Oswego elementary third and fourth-graders gathered on stage at the Charles E. Riley Elementary.
The annual event provides a competitive educational literacy experience for the primary and intermediate divisions as they vie for a position in the county wide event in Hannibal on Wednesday, April 25.
When the county teams gather Oswego will be represented by the third and fourth team from the Kingsford Park Elementary School while the fifth and sixth grade trio that advanced is from the Charles E. Riley Elementary School. Members of the KPS team were Katie Fierro, Caitie Lilly, and Julia Roman as well as alternate Grayson Cary while the CER intermediate team included Nicholas Hanna, Grace Hibbert and Leanna Restani.
The third-and fourth-grade competition will be long remembered as a classic. The regular competition encompasses 16 questions surrounding a variety of books that the students have read. At the completion of the 16 questions Kingsford, Minetto and Charles E. Riley were tied. Five questions into “overtime” the Minetto team failed to answer correctly leaving two trios to battle it out.
The ‘battle” endured as it wasn’t until the 27th bonus question that Kingsford Park was able to advance to the next round.
Librarian Molly Clark noted, “These students had to read to the n’th detail to get many of these questions correct.”
The runner up team from Charles E. Riley included Alexandria Delfino, Molly Fitzgibbons and Miranda Gilbert. Minetto, which also had advanced to the bonus round, included Zeida Olson, Angelina Guarrera and Nicole Mays. Representing Frederick Leighton were Aubrey Avery, Sophia DeLorenzo and Abigail McPherson while from Fitzhugh Jack Anzelone, Jeffery Fragale and Grace Hoffman carried the school colors.
The intermediate competition was interesting as Minetto held the lead after eight questions, but when the final points were tabulated Charles E. Riley trio advanced. Leighton, Minetto and Kingsford tied for second place followed by Fitzhugh Park.
Representing Leighton were Shae Carter, Dakota Countryman and Trinity Perry while the Minetto team included Leah Mullen, Danielle DelConte and Arlo Olson. Competing for Kingsford Park were Hari Nanthakumar and Anna Langlois while there team mate Brianna Bush was unable to attend. For Fitzhugh Park the team consisted of Skylar Trapasso, Monique Jones and Rose Huang.
The “Battle of the Books” panelists included Oswego City School District Superintendent of Schools Bill Crist as the moderator while assistant superintendent of curriculum and instruction Cathy Chamberlain along with Bill Riley of river’s end bookstore assisted in scoring.
The annual competition is organized by the Oswego City School District Librarians and included Kim Leroy, Molly Clark, Kerra Trivieri, Debbie McHugh, Sally Long along with Mary Alice Brunell and Gina Iorio who are under the guidance of OCSD Director of Literacy Laura Ryder.
