A quartet of Oswego High School students recently participated in the Zone 3 New York State School Music Association Area All-State Music Festival at Ithaca College.
Oswego music department team leader Cheryl Rogers said, “We are very proud to have had Emilie Benigno, Mackenzie Palmer, Gordon Pan and Geoffrey Taylor participate in this very competitive festival with students from Cayuga, Onondaga, Broome, Tioga, Cortland and Tompkins counties.”
This group is chosen by NYSSMA solo scores from the previous May. Rogers noted, “The lowest score we sent was a 96 out of 100 on a Level 6 All-State solo, and we worried that might not get in. All of the kids are amazing musician and many are members of the Syracuse Youth Orchestra.”
Continuing she said, “It was a very challenging program consisting of Tchaikovsky’s Capriccio Italian, Khachaturian’s Sabre Dance and the Emperor Waltz by Strauss.”
This year’s orchestra has the privilege of being conducted by Maestro Daniel Boico, an assistant conductor of the New York Philharmonic from 2009- until earlier this year. Boico has led all the orchestra’s popular Young People’s Concerts and assisted music director Alan Gilbert.
Benigno, Palmer and Pan all performed on violin while Taylor was in the cello section.
