A newly created “Oswego Writing Institute Community Award” has been presented to Oswego City School District elementary teacher Joan Dain.

Oswego school district faculty members participated in the annual Writing Institute summer workshop at SUNY Oswego and worked diligently to improve creative writing which will benefit students throughout the upcoming school year.

The writing institute concept was brought to Oswego by Joan Dain and facilitators of the workshop, Chris Walsh and Sharon Kane decided to institute this new recognition.

The new award was created to recognize someone “who has made significant contributions in the field of writing and writing instruction.”

It was noted that Dain, “has not only been involved in the Writing Institute from its inception, but inaugurated it and has been working extremely hard so that Oswego teachers continues to improve their teaching of writing.”

However, Dain has additional contributions. Chris Walsh said, “She has collaborated with local businesses and organizations to secure funding for a number of literacy initiatives, including a highly successful bookmobile with programming that targets all children in all areas of Oswego.”

In conclusion it was said, “Joan Dain sees a literacy need and figures out a way to fulfill it.”
