School psychologist receives local award

Oswego County Weeklies

Danny "Lee" Scaggs, a school psychologist employed by St. Lawrence-Lewis Board Of Cooperative Education Services, has been selected for the "School Psychologist Practitioner of the Year (2012-13)" award by Chapter 'A' of the New York Association of School Psychologists (NYASP).  Chapter 'A' includes all of St. Lawrence, Lewis and Jefferson Counties.  Chapter 'A' co-representatives Mary Kay Hafer and Cindy Burns-McDonald recently announced the award via the group's Facebook page, and Scaggs was also recognized for this honor during an awards luncheon at the NYASP Annual Conference held in White Plains, in late October.  Scaggs is currently serving the Massena Central School District.

He was nominated by one of his peers, David Stevens, and received letters of support from  his supervisors and most poignantly from one of the many students he has served.

This student noted that, "Mr. Scaggs has helped me through many difficult and confusing times in my life.  He has been caring, compassionate and non-judgmental. I've been able to talk to Mr. Scaggs when I felt that no one else understood what I was feeling.  He listened without telling me what I should do or how I should be feeling.  Today, I can handle most any situation, because I know I can come up with a solution.  This has all been due to Mr. Scaggs' gentle way of coaching me through these episodes".

Praise from his colleagues and supervisors was further noted in  Scaggs' expertise with assessment, consultation, program development, in-service programs and in his functioning on a variety of school teams and community agencies.

Scaggs holds a bachelor of arts in economics from SUNY Potsdam, a certificate of advanced study in school psychology from SUNY Oswego, and a master's in education in counseling and human development from St. Lawrence University. He holds a permanent certification in school psychology and in school counseling as well as being both a nationally certified school psychologist and nationally certified counselor.  He has also worked as a school counselor; on a crisis outreach team for Reachout of St. Lawrence County; as a caseworker for Catholic Charities; and as a mental health counselor at SUNY Potsdam.  Scaggs serves on the Renewal House Board of Directors and is a board member for Selective Service.  He resides in Canton and has one son,  Jacob.

He is the son of Danny and Alma Scaggs of Mexico.  He is a 1988 graduate of Mexico Academy and Central School.
